Yes, I am amusing myself with soap-opera-themed dog titles. I don’t even watch soaps. It’s still kind of fun in a mockingly dramatic sort of way, don’t you think?
In any case, much has transpired since last week, and after having Murphy (our prospective adoptee dog) visit all day this past Saturday without incident, we decided to adopt him. Yes, there will be some issues to work through – dogs never behave the same “on loan” (or during the adjustment phase) as they do once they’ve settled in – but I don’t have any doubt that we can work through them as they come up, and eventually reach a harmonious co-existence for all parties. It may be quite a lot of work, and it may not be nearly as much as I think…hard to say, really. The thing is, once I commit to a dog, it’s a marriage-like contract for me. We put in whatever time/training necessary to make things work, no matter what, ’til death do us part. So we’re in it for the long haul now.
Murphy won’t move in until Thursday night after work – he has severe separation anxiety, and I didn’t want to bring him in and then promptly leave him alone to go to work (he’ll have to be separated from Mica while we’re gone until we can be sure they’re safe together – probably at least a month). He also sleeps in the bedroom with his foster family at the moment, and we don’t allow dogs in the bedroom, so I wanted a few nights where his whining/having to get up and check on him wouldn’t be an issue for work. I’m going to take Friday off, and we’ll only be gone for short periods of time (1-2 hrs. max) as needed over the weekend. Hopefully that will make next Monday at least slightly less stressful for him. Switching families is already going to be a really big shock, so we want to make it as smooth as possible.
That also gives us time to get a few things – I have two leashes and a collar on order (already have a prong collar, and old collars he can use with his cone while we’re gone), and Tuesday night we’re headed out to buy him a new bed. I’ll pick up a tag for his collar one night this week as well, so he has ID right away. I’m getting room ready in the cupboards and fridge for his food & supplements, and finding a spot for the leggings he needs to wear while his cone is off.
In other news (quickly, because it’s way past my bedtime and I want to get this posted):
– I still hate Daylight Saving Time (and my mobile alarms are all screwy, dammit)
– I *will* get three blog posts in this week (not here…but one each on two other blogs as well)
– I’m gonna have to do my taxes one of these days, which is really annoying. Brace for much whining.
