The Writer's Desk

Writing, publishing & marketing notes from Jamie DeBree & her alter egos

May 28, 2013: THHG & EB

Writing Session #1: The Handyman’s Harem Girl
Author/Genre: JD/Rom. Suspense
Words written:  145
Total Words:   29,202
Time Spent:  15 minutes (break)

Notes: I
guess it’s just going to be one of those weeks for writing. I’m really
kind of annoyed with myself – last week, I knew exactly where this story
was going, what the endgame was, and more or less how I needed to get
there. Everything was coming together nicely in my head, and I didn’t
want to put it down. But I had to, and smug writer that I am, I didn’t
bother to leave myself notes for the next scene(s) at all. So today when
I picked it up, I had *no idea* where I was going with the scene I left
on a cliffhanger last week. None, nada, zilch. Here’s hoping I can jog
my memory before this afternoon’s break/writing session…otherwise, we
could be in trouble here… *sigh*

Writing Session #2: The Handyman’s Harem Girl
Author/Genre: JD/Rom. Suspense
Words written:  262
Total Words:   29,464
Time Spent:  15 minutes (stolen from lunch)

Notes: I
deleted and rewrote the last couple hundred words twice before I
finally found the right path (or what feels like it might be the right
path now). It doesn’t happen often, but it does happen occasionally, and
I hate it. I’ve been suffering a crisis of confidence recently since
stumbling over a negative review (I normally don’t read reviews at all,
I was just an idiot and checked a product page for a completely
different reason), and that’s got me way off my game. I need to leave
that behind and get back into creative/artist mode. That’s the only way
I’ll be happy with this when it’s done.

Like I said, I feel like I’m back on the right track now. I hope I can keep going this afternoon to finish the scene…

Writing Session #3: The Handyman’s Harem Girl
Author/Genre: JD/Rom. Suspense
Words written:  352
Total Words:   29,816
Time Spent:  15 minutes (break)

Notes: And
done, finally. The main plot is wrapped up too, the killer down, and
just mop-up and the happily ever after to explore. Though I think the
wrap-up probably needs work…I’ll think about that next week. It’s
really too short for the series, but I don’t want to add stuff just for
filler either. I have a feeling this particular story is going to need a
thorough revision, not just a quick run through. And I hate
revisions…

This may well be my last Fantasy Ranch book too. I have several
more planned out, but I think I might be getting a little far afield of
the setting, whether I’m just bored with it, or what. I don’t know.
We’ll see. For now, I’m just glad to have this scene done. One thing at a
time…

Writing Session #4: English Breakfast
Author/Genre: JD/Rom. Suspense
Words written:  426
Total Words:   5,946
Time Spent:  30 minutes

Notes: This
story went better today, I think, though I’m still feeling a bit off my
game. If I could just figure out what the sensitive information was
for, and what the journalist was going to do with it, I’d have a better
idea of where the story is going. All in good time though, I guess. For
now, poor Karen is not having a good evening, and it’s about to get
worse.

But not today. I was going to go for one more session tonight…and I need a break. So back at it tomorrow. Tonight, something completely different. Comic books!
